It is this economic and social injustice that John Steinbeck depicts in the novel The Pearl, a re-telling of an old Mexican folktale. Poverty destroys the hopes and dreams of the poor, and it creates societies in which a select wealthy few control the lives and destinies of those who are not wealthy. It happens because no one wanted to help him out. ![]() When a poor person dies of hunger, it does not happen because of fate.
